About the program

Graduates from this program must be able to independently generate new knowledge or apply knowledge in an original and innovative manner. 

This program includes a set of academic degrees and recognitions that make up the career of a medical scientist, from the very early stages of training, through research summers, up to consolidation as a leading clinical researcher.

Candidate selection

Prior to beginning the program, there is a stage to discover scientific vocation, through guided practice with prestigious researchers and their research groups and with partner institutions of the Tecnológico de Monterrey. This experience consists of getting involved in a real research protocol for three 10-week summers, developing information search skills, use of laboratory instruments, use of statistical tools, programming, or use of high-tech interfaces to validate hypotheses related to neurological, cardiovascular, infectious, and oncological diseases, among others. 

The specific areas in which the student will be able to carry out research in the partner institutions are:

During this stage, both the student and the tutors will determine whether the performance and vocation are appropriate to be considered a candidate to formally enter the first stage of the program.

Stage 1: Bachelor in Biosciences

The first stage of the MD-PhD Program is the bachelor’s degree in Biosciences. This program is equivalent to the first part of the Medical Doctor degree with 11 extra subjects to develop the scientific skills necessary to begin a doctoral program in the future.

These extra subjects are called the Research and Innovation Modality (or Research Summer). This modality aims to develop skills and attitudes for research and innovation in the student, through practical work in research groups. After finishing the Modality, the student will be able to:

  • Apply the scientific method to solving practical problems.
  • Write research reports, scientific articles, and release notes.
  • Apply the method for the invention and development of patents.
  • Write or participate as a co-inventor of patents or other intellectual property products.

Admission process 

  • Obtain a minimum score of 1400 in the Admission Exam.
  • Proven English proficiency with a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL (Paper Test), 248 (Computer Based Test), or 98 (Internet Based Test).
  • Request a degree change from Medical Doctor to Bachelor in Biosciences.
  • Request registration into the Research and Innovation Modality.
  • Have a minimum cumulative average of 90 in undergraduate studies.
  • Submit the request for participation and the signed letter of intent for the Research Summer to the Department of Innovation and Academic Quality.
  • Review the list of selected students. The assignments are determined jointly by the Tecnológico de Monterrey Selection Committee and the Partner Institution where the research summer will take place and the decision is not appealable.
  • Send the documentation required by the Partner Institution including the following: 
  1. Passport according to the nationality of origin and a Valid US Visa.
  2. Proof of financial solvency for USD 5,000 per month during the entirety of the period of stay at the Partner Institution.
  3. Purchase the Medical Insurance indicated by the Partner Institution where the research summer will take place, for the duration of stay.
  4. Comply with laboratory tests, required vaccinations, and any other health requirement requested by the Partner Institution.
  5. Send any other documentation requested by the Human Resources and Immigration department of the Partner Institution.

Stage 2: Doctorate in Biotechnology

The second stage in the MD-PhD Program is the scientific training, which lasts 4 years. Students must complete the first year of the doctoral program at Campus Monterrey where they will enroll in 11 theoretical courses that are included in the curriculum. The remaining three years of the intensive research work program, which make up the Doctorate in Biotechnology, can be carried out at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute or MD Anderson Cancer Center, depending on which is assigned to them. The professors are scientists from these institutions who have been approved by the Tecnológico de Monterrey as visiting professors and who will provide the necessary advice for the development of the doctoral dissertation. 

Admission process

  • To have been accepted by the Selection Committee made up of professors from The Methodist Hospital Research Institute or the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the School of Medicine of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.
  • Present the Graduate Studies Admission Test (PAEP) and get at least 550 points or its equivalent of 1,200 points in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Have a minimum cumulative average of 90 or the equivalent in the previous studies.
  • Proven English proficiency with a minimum score of 600 on the TOEFL (Paper Test), 248 (Computer Based Test), or 98 (Internet Based Test). 
  • Have completed the Bachelor of Biosciences (LBC - BBS) program or the equivalent before the approval of the first course in the Doctorate program in Biotechnology. 
  • Two letters of recommendation from teachers.
  • Essay (two pages summarizing the reasons why you want to be admitted to the Doctorate in Biotechnology and your future career plans).
  • Personal interview.

Stage 3: Medical Doctor

The third stage of the MD-PhD Program is clinical training. Students complete two years of clinical courses to complete their training as Medical Doctors and carry out their Professional Social Service, requested by the Mexican Ministry of Health.

The student must process his re-entry into the Medical Doctor (Clinics) program in Student Services, requesting re-entry with recess.

    • The Methodist Hospital Research Institute (TMHRI).
    • MD Anderson Cancer Center.
